Buy Digital Cameras: What do you look for when you want to buy a digital still camera.

When I hear ‘buy digital cameras’ it is usually implied in the question, ‘what digital camera should I buy?’ The answer to
that question is easy to find once you understand what the major features you should ask about.

All digital cameras have major features they are measured by: mega pixels, optical zoom, LCD size and movie mode. Let’s review these four features...

Mega pixels are dots or pixels counted by millions, hence mega pixels. Of course the more mega pixels you have, the
greater the image resolution or sharpness of the photo. Mega pixels are found on the CCD or image sensor. Each pixel
records light which is then converted into digital information though the cameras digital processor.

Optical zoom is how much a lens increases in magnification when zoomed in. Usually the shorter the zoom, the smaller the
digital camera will be. Conversely, a 12 time’s optical zoom usually results in a larger digital still camera. A cameras
lens construction dictates the focal length (ie. 28 – 200mm in 35mm equivalency) and zooming ability.

The LCD monitor is the electronics technology usually found on the back of the digital still camera. Some people like a
large screen for ease of viewing while others do not concern themselves about it as they like to use the optical or
electronic viewfinder instead. I have found most people prefer a larger LCD monitor. Currently on many of the ‘larger’
LCD cameras, the manufacturer’s do not add any type of viewfinder as they feel the LCD monitor is used primarily by
photographers.

Digital still cameras usually have a movie mode and most are with sound however, as with LCD screen, some people really
like this feature while others could take it or leave it. Usually you have to have an experience when the movie mode was
very useful for you before you really appreciate the benefit of this feature.

So there you have some major terms to start your digital still camera purchase.
