Digital Camera Batteries are a very important part of the digital
camera decision making process!
When digital camera became the new name on the block people quickly
discovered the significance of battery life. In the early days of
digital still cameras people were shocked how a
regular set of alkaline batteries would become exhausted and have to be replaced
with another set after as few as 10 or 20 exposures.
Digital cameras and their electronics technology had to react in order to
save a fledgling industry by designing longer lasting batteries that didn’t
increase physical size to the cameras.
Companies like Canon, Nikon,
Sony and others could not just look at mega pixels, or optical zoom or movie
mode or even LCD screen size when considering new digital still camera. They had
to be able to power the camera with all its
electronics efficiently without
adding weight or size.
Lithium Ion batteries blossomed as they were memory free, in other words did
not need to be exhausted before recharged plus they were smaller, lighter and
more powerful than a set of alkaline batteries.
Another was Nimh or Nickel Metal Hydride. These batteries were the size and
approximate weight of regular AA size batteries but gave a tremendous increase
in output power thereby allowing a digital camera the ability to shoot 3 to 5
times more photos before having to recharge the battery. Nimh is also memory
free, although they recommend they be drained once in a while. The other
advantage of Nimh is it offers the camera the ability to use a variety of non
rechargeable batteries if one runs out of charged NiMH.
Of course, this allows you to do the things you want to do, like shooting
photos.
