Digital Camera Battery: What is the best battery for my digital still camera?

Whether your digital camera battery is NiMH, regular ‘AA’ or lithium Ion, they are all battery gluttons. The electronics in a digital camera demand power and things like the LCD monitor and movie mode are major contributors.

Digital cameras need lots of power and the mega pixels sensor, bit processors, LCD monitors and movie mode are some of the reasons for major battery demands.

When digital still cameras first began, most accepted regular AA size batteries and the biggest complaint by far was the incredible demands of the batteries by the cameras. People were forever replacing batteries and it appeared the only ones happy about it was the battery companies themselves.

Enter nickel metal hydride batteries! They were rechargeable, memory free, or almost, 3 times more powerful than AA’s and could recharge approximately 300 times. Wow! People were dancing in the streets. Then we found out a 1200 mah NiMH battery was going to be replace with a 1400 mah NiMH up until today where we now have 2500mah and who knows where the end is. NiMH is a great battery.

Lithium Ion was used earlier in video camcorders, and slowly they were being introduced to digital still cameras. They were also rechargeable and truly memory free, 3 plus times more powerful than AA’s and also could recharge approximately 300 times. Again, people were dancing in the streets because Lithium Ion batteries were great.

Then the argument began about which was better. Some argued for the NiMH because is was still a ‘AA’ size and in a pinch one could substitute regular AA’s and others argued that the Lithium Ion was the best because it had absolutely no memory and lasted longer between charges.

The true answer in is both are good especially now that we can save having to use AA batteries to excess. At least we can take lots of photographs.
