DLP Television is the New Kid on the Block
 

The DLP television (Digital Light Processing) technology is a revolutionary TV display that uses an optical semiconductor to digitally manipulate light. This technology can be used on a range of products, including large screen digital TVs. The DLP chip can also be used for projectors for business, home, professional venue and digital cinema (DLP Cinema). It is used by leading electronics companies since 1996.
 

How does DLP Work?

The DLP TV design is based on the Texas Instrument DMD (Digital Micromirror Device) chip. More than 1.3 million micromirrors tilt on or off, depending on whether it faces or tilts away from the light source inside the DLP. This creates light or dark pixels on the face of the projection screen.

Then the light filters to a color wheel, rotating 120 times each second, producing the correct hue. Therefore, each mirror can turn on or off several thousands of times per second reproducing up to 1024 shades of gray.

The four main components in the DLP system are: the DMD chip, light source, color wheel, and optical assembly. Light from the lamp passes through a color wheel filter and into the DMD chip which will switch its mirrors on or off in relation to the color reflecting off them, producing a television image.
