Notebook Computers – Expanding Their Capabilities
In keeping with the portability and mobility of notebook computers, size and
weight have to be a consideration for the notebook computer. Because of this,
laptop computers cannot have all of the internal devices that desktop computers
have. In order to increase the functionality of
notebooks, some of the devices in these computers such as floppy drives and
cd-rom drives have been made interchangeable in laptops so that only one
internal device for the notebook can be connected at any given time.
Laptop Computers – PCMCIA Cards Upgrade Their Functions
Another advancement in laptop
electronics was the development of PCMCIA cards. These are the small cards
about the width of credit cards that slide into the side of the notebook. These
notebook cards even further increase the functionality of these mobile and
portable computers.
Some of the available functions of these notebook PCMCIA cards include network
connections. These cards can be modems, allowing notebooks to be connected
through a telephone line. They can also be Ethernet cards, allowing notebooks to
be connected directly to networks. Wireless network cards are also available in
this form, allowing notebooks to connect to networks through wireless routers.
Other available PCMCIA notebook cards are sound cards that increase the sound
capabilities of notebooks. Flash memory cards are also available for notebooks
to be used in much the same way floppy disks or cd-roms are used. A cheap laptop
and used laptops may have differing
technologies when it comes to these cards, so you need to explore this before
buying one of these notebooks.
