Underwater digital camera: the ability of a camera to go under the surface
of water without leaking or in any way damaging the camera.
Currently there is one underwater digital camera on the market; the Pentax
Optio WP. However, there are many digital still cameras that have underwater
housings which allow the camera to go underwater. Also, there are some digital
still cameras which are all-weather and can
withstand a heavy dousing of water or a quick submersion as long as it is not
longer than a second or two. Let’s check out some differences.
Digital cameras truly are meant to be used above water; however, many people
want their camera to have the ability to be used underwater.
The Pentax Optio WP digital still camera is
registered with a JIS class 8 waterproof rated exterior. This means the camera
can be submerged to a depth of 5 feet for up to 30 minutes. Pentax designed this
ultra compact camera with a 3 times internal optical zoom lens, 5 mega pixels,
movie mode with sound and a 2 inch LCD monitor. The Pentax Optio WP is perfect
for the beach, pool, hiking and many other outdoor and indoor uses.
Other models, which include the ability to use underwater housings, allow the
camera to be submerged up to 100+ feet. If diving is a requirement of your
digital photography, be sure to check the cameras ability to accept an
underwater housing, prior to making your purchase. Usually underwater housings
begin around $200 US and do require annual maintenance to refresh all seals.
The other type of underwater camera is actually a quick dunk. Most all-weather
cameras do not recommend submersion however I have seen some cameras submerged
accidentally. Hopefully that happens to an all-weather
digital camera as a regular
camera will flood and usually cause un-repairable electronics damage. As long as
an all-weather camera is removed from submersion quickly, usually no damage is
caused to the camera.
One of the nice things about underwater, all-weather or underwater housings are
